For Irrational Exhibits 9, a ongoing series of performance exhibitions in Los Angeles, a collaborative, participatory installation incorporating seamless photo paper was used to cover the main entrance to the LACE gallery.
For a period of time during the exhibition the gallery entrance was blocked, effectively trapping the audience either inside or outside the space.
Collaborators Badly Licked Bear and Marcus Kuiland-Nazario assisted in writing the text "The Impossibility of Representation" on both sides of the paper in various materials including paint, marker, pencil and air freshener. Audience members spoke to one another from either side of the paper wall. Slowly, the audience began to push back on the work, eventually ripping the paper to re-open the entrance to the gallery.
